A “Very Low Calorie Diet” (VLCD) is a low carbohydrate, total food replacement for the dietary management of obesity. It provides 800 calories or less per day, whilst consisting of sufficient protein, fatty acids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals for safe and rapid weight loss.
The OPTIFAST® Programme is based on a very low calorie diet (VLCD), which provides roughly 800 kcal of energy per day for the first 8 weeks as part of a managed weight loss programme.
The Programme has shown to significantly reduce body weight by 1-2.5 kg per week with greater weight loss than other forms of calorie restriction. Most overweight and obese patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes are eligible to use OPTIFAST VLCD as part of an overall management program that emphasises the importance of ongoing weight maintenance.
The OPTIFAST® Programme was launched in South Africa in 2017 in partnership with the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology (CDE) as a pilot project under the supervision of accredited Registered Dietitians. OPTIFAST® Programme is a structured nutritional and behavioural change programme developed by leading experts and supported by medical professionals.
